Play it Safe: Harm Reduction Strategies in Land-Based Venues

Competing with the convenience and allure of online gaming, land-based venues have adopted new technology that offers players more ways to access funds to gamble. Keeping players safe in land-based venues is as important now as it has ever been. This session will examine the current landscape, research, and some innovative solutions designed to make the gaming floor safer for players. Speakers will address topics including payment innovations and the associated risks; harm reduction ATMs that prompt players to reflect on their gambling before a transaction, provide RG information and counselling options, and set withdrawal limits; and will discuss the introduction of a multi-venue self-exclusion system in the UK and Australia designed to improve the efficiency of land-based programs.

Alex Blaszczynski

Co-Director, Gambling Treatment and Research Centre

Professor Alex Blaszczynski.is the co-director of the Gambling Treatment and Research Centre. He has conducted research funded directly by Australian or international government, or government-related funding agencies, and industry operators on clinical and responsible gambling topics.

Ko Hirano

President, Trust Networks Inc.

Ko Hirano was educated on problem gaming from the late Dr. Shannon Bybee at IGI of UNLV in the late 1990s. He then had made efforts to promote knowledge about it in Japan. His mission is to provide ATM service embodying responsible gaming. Hirano has a B. A., University of Tokyo and majored in public law.

Alex Price

Senior Researcher, RGC

Alex Price is a Senior Researcher for RG+ and the Responsible Gambling Council with four years of experience in the gambling field and another ten years in public health practice, research and evaluation. During his time at the RGC, he has completed or is currently engaged in projects across several Canadian jurisdictions, the United Kingdom, and Australia. Alex has extensive experience in responsible gambling and harm minimization, having completed several projects on a variety of topics (e.g., low-risk gambling guidelines, video lottery in bars and lounges, sports betting, and self-exclusion).
