Besides harming themselves, people with gambling problems often negatively affect other people close to them. As gambling problems persist, the entire family can suffer, as can friends and co-workers. The gambler may lie, manipulate and steal - impacting different people in a variety of negative ways.
Negative impacts can include:
feelings of depression, anxiety, guilt, anger, loneliness, isolation, disappointment, reduced self-worth, loss of control and suicidal thoughts
insomnia, stomach problems, headaches, neck and back pain and other stress-related health conditions
tobacco, alcohol and drug use may increase as gambling increases
such as lying, manipulating, verbal, emotional and physical abuse, and withdrawing from social contacts
loss of income, increased debt (through credit cards, credit lines, or other loans), inability to pay bills and other financial difficulties
such as theft, forgery and fraud
such as absenteeism, reduced productivity and missed opportunities
