Project Weathervane: Measuring Gambling Behaviours, Knowledge and Attitudes in Ontario

Jon Kelly (Responsible Gambling Council), Wayne Skinner (Centre for Addiction and Mental Health) | Oct 1, 2001

Project Weathervane is a study designed to give a snapshot of Ontarians’ behaviour, knowledge and attitudes related to responsible and problem gambling. The information from this study will help guide the design of gambling prevention programming, as well as serve as baseline data for monitoring the impact of public awareness initiatives and prevention strategies.

This project provides updated, as well as original, information on Ontarians’ gambling behaviors, knowledge and attitudes. The focus is fairly broad, including gambling practices, awareness and understanding of responsible and problem gambling, and knowledge of odds and probabilities. This baseline information will prove valuable in the creation of innovative prevention strategies and monitoring the impact of these strategies. In this regard, three key areas are particularly noteworthy:

  1. Understanding and knowledge about problem and responsible gambling
  2. Awareness of gambling programs
  3. Knowledge about how gambling works
