Responsible Gambling for Lotteries

Responsible Gambling Council | Jan 10, 2014

Insight 2012 took an in-depth look at current RG practices for lottery provision, considered possible ways those practices could be improved, and explored opportunities for the development of new practices—particularly in light of the new and upcoming forms of lottery delivery. The project gathered information from Canadian and other jurisdictions, and sought viewpoints from multiple stakeholder groups, including lottery operators, regulators, players, treatment providers, retailers, and others.

Insight 2012 identified best practices in five key areas of operation:

  1. Responsible Gambling Policies — policy statements clearly identify corporate commitment to RG
  2. Advertising and Promotion — campaigns are vetted from an RG perspective and do not mislead people, or target at-risk populations
  3. Informed Decision Making — clear information is available to players about the risks of play
  4. Assisting Customers — staff are able to respond to customers who express concerns about their gambling
  5. Staff Training — RG education is a component of the training process for retailers selling lottery tickets
