Scared Money Opens to Acclaim in Northern Ontario

Oct 12, 2012

Newscan (Vol. 14, Issue 40)

RGC's newest play, Scared Money, has just started its Ontario tour in Northern Ontario, making stops in Moose Factory, Moosonee, Timmins and Sudbury, to very positive reviews.

As reported in the Timmins Press, guidance counsellor Kelly Ann Marks called the show "very engaging and relatable for the students. The actors … push a few limits … they make it interesting so that kids are really engaged in the presentation."

Now with its 7th production, the youth drama program has taken steps to explore social gaming, cyber-bullying and online gambling as they relate to young people's understanding of the risks associated with gambling. This year's play invites students into the lives of three friends trying to jumpstart their music careers while holding down jobs and paying bills.

When one bandmate starts to turn from video gaming to online gambling, and then starts chasing losses with the band's savings, things start to spiral out of control. "It's more than money [you can lose]," says one student interviewed for CBC Radio – Sudbury, "it's relationships, your family, your job. It's everything."

Scared Money is delivered free in high schools across Ontario this fall, and includes a 30-minute post-performance game show-style activity to reinforce messages. Each performance also connects students with local sources of help— with local treatment providers invited to attend the show.

Bookings are still available this fall, and are free of charge to high schools in Ontario thanks to funding from the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. (In Atlantic Canada, please take a look at 82 per cent for more information.) Please contact Mary Davis if you, or someone you know, would be interested in having this play performed at a high school near you.
